The results are in! Following the conclusion of the 2021 USEMS/FSEM Essay Contest, we are delighted to announce that the judges have decided to award First Place to Dr Alexandra Mundell for her essay entitled “The Pandemic-driven Evolution of Sports and Exercise Medicine”.

The judges commended Dr Mundell’s essay for its clear style and well-constructed arguments that posed numerous interesting questions to the reader.

Noting the exceptionally high standard of all essays submitted this year, the judges also awarded Second Place to Dr Isobel Baxter for her essay “Conservative management- not the right party line for modern sports and exercise medicine practice”.

As winner, Dr Mundell will receive the prize of £100 plus entry to an upcoming conference, as well as support towards having her editorial published. Dr Baxter will also receive support towards publication.

The judging panel of FSEM Education Committee Chair Prof Courtney Kipps, alongside FSEM Council Members Dr Catherine Lester and Dr Richard Seah, commended all the submissions for their interesting and well written editorials, all of which showed unique and insightful viewpoints on hot topics in SEM.

The contest, organised by the Undergraduate Sports & Exercise Medicine Society in partnership with the Faculty, was open to undergraduates and recent graduates and invited entrants to submit essays in the style of journal editorials on a choice of subjects.
