Our EDI Vision Statement
The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK (FSEM) and the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) have come together to create a unified Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Vision Statement, marking a pivotal step forward as both organisations prepare to form the new College of Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine.

Explaining our vision
At the heart of this vision is a shared commitment to respect, support, and empower, a call to action to build an inclusive SEM community where equity and diversity is embedded and championed. This joint statement is more than aspirational, it is a strategic framework built around five key pillars:
- Promote a culture of dignity and wellbeing
- Drive positive change
- Focus on education and research
- Champion leadership and development
- Offer guidance and support
This vision is grounded in the findings of the 2024 EDI Survey and subsequent focus groups, which revealed both personal and systemic challenges within the SEM specialty. In response, the FSEM EDI Committee, working closely with BASEM, has committed to sustained action, including the development of a new EDI Position Statement and integration of EDI principles into the Faculty’s Professional Code
The joint strategy day held in July 2024 was a landmark moment, where both organisations aligned on shared values and objectives. The decision to adopt ‘Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’ as the committee’s name reflects a deeper, more intentional focus on fairness and representation.
As the new College takes shape, this EDI Vision Statement signals a unified, forward-looking approach, one that recognises the diversity of its members and the importance of creating a culture where everyone can thrive.
