CSEM June 2026 Update: Milestones & Next Steps

We wanted to share the latest milestones achieved as we continue the transition toward establishing our new College of Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine (CSEM).
Thanks to the hard work of our teams and your ongoing engagement, we have made significant progress across communications, governance, digital delivery, staffing, and operational readiness. While much of this work takes place behind the scenes, it is all focused on ensuring that the College is ready to launch as a fully functioning organisation from day one, with continuity for members and minimal disruption.
Key Milestones Reached
Landing Page Live:
Our initial online presence is officially up and running, providing a centralised hub for all future College updates: https://csem.uk/
This represents the first step in building a broader digital presence for the College.
FAQs Live:
We have launched a comprehensive and growing FAQ section on the landing page to address your most common queries: https://csem.uk/faqs/.
This content continues to be expanded in response to member questions and feedback, helping to ensure transparency and clarity throughout the transition. If you wish to submit a question, you can do so here.
Member Category Information Distributed:
All members have now received confirmation of their new CSEM membership category and associated fees. This has been a key step in providing clarity ahead of transition and supporting individual planning. We have seen strong engagement from members on this, with queries and feedback helping to refine and confirm the approach.
Questions & Corrections Addressed:
Our team has reviewed and responded to the first wave of member feedback and queries, ensuring clarity and consistency moving forward. This has included addressing individual circumstances as well as identifying common themes to inform updates to guidance and FAQs.
Strategy Meeting:
The CSEM Office Bearers convened in London in June to begin developing a high-level strategy for the new College. Initial discussions focused on priorities, positioning, and opportunities for the organisation. Once drafted, this strategy will be further refined through upcoming member consultations and a planned survey during the first months of operation, ensuring members play a central role in shaping the future direction of the College.
College Byelaws:
The College Byelaws have been rewritten to align with our submitted Articles of Association and have been reviewed by the CSEM Office Bearers. They are currently undergoing external legal review and form part of a broader governance framework, including a comprehensive suite of policies covering staff, members, committees, Council and Board.
At the same time, work has progressed to establish Council and committee structures for the interim first year of the College, creating important opportunities for members to get involved once the College is formally established.
Transfer Agreements:
The first drafts of the transfer agreements between CSEM, FSEM, and BASEM are complete and undergoing initial review. These agreements set out in detail how key elements of the existing organisations, including assets, contracts, systems, and day-to-day operational activities will transfer into the new College. They are designed to ensure that the transition is carried out in a structured, transparent, and legally robust way, enabling CSEM to begin operating smoothly from the point of approval.
BASEM Transfer of Assets Vote:
We expect to be in a position to set and confirm a date for the BASEM members’ meeting to formally approve the transfer of assets, in line with BASEM’s Articles of Association. Following this, the transfer will be formally approved by the BASEM Board through the transfer agreement. For FSEM, approval can be completed directly by the Board under its governing arrangements.
This reflects the approach set out in the original outcome document and ensures that the process is carried out in line with each organisation’s governance requirements.
BJSM Podcast Feature:
A recent episode of the British Journal of Sports Medicine podcast features a detailed discussion on the formation of the new College and its impact on SEM in the UK. You can listen to insights from Professor Patrick Wheeler (BASEM), Dr Julia Newton (CSEM), and Dr Natasha Jones (FSEM): here.
Digital Platform & Member Systems Development:
Work is well advanced on the full CSEM website, alongside the development of a new member system and online portal. These platforms will support core member services including membership management, payments, event booking, and communications.
In parallel, significant work is underway to establish the new IT environment and prepare for secure data migration, ensuring systems are fully operational and aligned from day one.
Organisational & Staff Transition:
A major focus over recent months has been preparing staff and the organisation for transition.
Colleagues across FSEM and BASEM have now completed the formal TUPE consultation process and have been matched into roles within the new College structure. This process has been supported by external HR expertise and a programme of engagement activity aimed at establishing shared ways of working and a unified organisational culture.
This work is essential to ensuring continuity, stability, and a strong operational foundation as the College becomes active.
Operational & Financial Readiness:
Behind the scenes, substantial work is progressing to ensure the College is operationally ready for launch. This includes developing financial infrastructure such as establishing a CSEM bank account and payment system, alongside preparing processes to support membership, education, and communications activity from day one.
These achievements represent vital steps in establishing CSEM, and we want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who has contributed feedback, asked questions, and engaged with this process. Your input continues to play an important role in shaping the College.
What Happens Next?
The next phase will involve inviting members to confirm and update their personal details, set up payment information, and access the new member portal. This will be a key step in ensuring a smooth and seamless transition into the new College when we go live.
In parallel, work will continue across all areas to finalise governance arrangements, systems, legal agreements, and operational processes. Council and committee structures for the first year will also be confirmed, creating early opportunities for member involvement in shaping the College.
Our application remains under review with the Charity Commission. While their current processing backlog means we do not have a definitive timeline, we are advancing all governance, legal, operational, and administrative arrangements so that we can move quickly once approval is granted, minimising any delay between registration and full operational readiness.
We are making strong, steady progress and remain deeply grateful for your continued support, engagement, and patience as we build a unified, modern College for the future of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
Kind regards,
FSEM and BASEM
