1000 Members: FSEM achieve huge membership milestone

By Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK, 22 Sep, 2025 | 6 min read

During the week we gather in Edinburgh for the 18th, and final, Annual Awards Ceremony of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK (FSEM), we mark not only the achievements of our newest Fellows, Members, and Diplomates, but also a historic moment in the Faculty’s journey, as FSEM officially surpassed 1000 members this year.

This milestone is a testament to the growing recognition of Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) as a vital specialty, and to the collective commitment of professionals across disciplines who share our vision – to improve the health of the nation through physical activity.

A Thriving, Multidisciplinary Community

Our President, Dr Natasha Jones, who has now been in her role for 4 years, reflected on this achievement:

“We have welcomed and grown our multispecialty and multiprofessional membership substantially, and we are delighted to have reached the huge milestone of over 1000 members! We now have three dedicated multidisciplinary committees – in Team Care, Exercise Medicine and Musculoskeletal Medicine – within our vital structure of wider contributing groups. These additions reflect the importance we place to ensure that all of our members and fellows have a chance to advocate and influence across all three strands of the SEM specialty.”

Over the past four years, FSEM has seen a 56% increase in membership, reflecting its evolution into a truly multidisciplinary and multispecialty organisation. With the aforementioned establishment of dedicated committees in Team Care, Exercise Medicine, and Musculoskeletal Medicine, members now have more opportunities than ever to shape the future of SEM and advocate for excellence across all domains of care.

Driving Standards, Shaping Futures

FSEM continues to lead the way in professional standards, offering rigorous examinations and accreditations, including the soon-to-be launched GPwER in MSK Medicine and expanding diplomas in Exercise Medicine and Team Care. These initiatives ensure that clinicians are equipped to deliver expert, evidence-based care across the NHS and beyond. Through initiatives like Moving Medicine, developed in partnership with Sport England, OHID, and others, FSEM also empowers clinicians to integrate physical activity into patient care.

Looking ahead to a unified college

As FSEM prepares to unify with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) to form the College of Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine (CSEM), this milestone of 1000 members serves as a powerful foundation for the future. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive professional home for SEM practitioners across the UK and globally.

Everyone at the Faculty would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to every member of FSEM. Your dedication, expertise and commitment has been the driving force behind our growth and success. By working together towards our collective vision, you have helped us reach this huge milestone of over 1000 members. We are hugely grateful for your continued support and look forward to shaping the future of SEM together.
