Careers in SEM can be varied in this broad-based specialty with a multi-disciplinary approach, SEM practitioners can work in a number of settings providing medical care across sport and exercise at all levels.
SEM in the NHS
Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) services in the NHS are flexible and can be delivered in primary, secondary and intermediate care settings. SEM physicians also work in the NHS delivering Exercise Medicine Services and providing Medical Musculoskeletal Services.
There are presently 14 full time equivalent consultants working within the NHS, and these numbers should increase as growing numbers of medical professionals choose to specialise in the area. The Faculty is currently actively working to increase the number of Sport and Exercise Medicine positions in the NHS.

Part-time Locum GP (SEM)
Required to work in military settings - various locations
Overall job description – Service Requirements:
A locum GP (Diploma in Sports and Exercise medicine) is required to work as part of a Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) to provide assessments, clinical diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation management of complex musculoskeletal sports, exercise and training injuries. Investigation and treatment interventions such as MSK US, Injection Therapy and ESWT are to be expected in addition to onward care, referrals and summaries for medical boards on discharge.
Locum cover currently required at the following locations:
RRU Catterick, North Yorkshire
RRU Cranwell, Lincolnshire
RRU Cosford , Wolverhampton
RRU Honington, Bust St Edmunds
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
Must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) both on the main register and on the GMC GP Register without Restrictions and hold a Sports and Exercise Medicine Diploma or Master’s degree or Specialist Register Sports & Exercise Medicine (SEM)/Fellow Sports & Exercise Medicine (FSEM). A minimum of 3 years’ experience in SEM is required.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
Previous Ministry of Defence (MOD) experience.
Postgraduate qualifications in interventions such as MSK US, Injection Therapy and ESWT.

Locum Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine or Rheumatology and Rehabilitation post
Military Medical Personnel is urgently looking for a Locum Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine or Rheumatology & Rehabilitation at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court in Epsom, Surrey. This is a full time locum post delivering musculoskeletal rehabilitation for young injured service personnel.
The post holder will have full registration with the GMC, and will have trained in and hold a CCT ( or be within 3 months of completion) in Sports and Exercise Medicine or Rheumatology and Rehabilitation and be on the specialist register. Experience in the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries is essential and experience of rehabilitation within the armed services is highly desirable.
