The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine Celebrates its 10th Anniversary with Royal Guest of Honour
The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) UK celebrated its 10th anniversary, today, at the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, with special guest of honour HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of the Faculty.
Her Royal Highness presented the awards and gave a speech, at the FSEM’s Diploma Ceremony in the historic Surgeon’s Hall Building, to mark the occasion and celebrate the newly awarded Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultants and Doctors with their friends and family.
President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine, Dr Paul D Jackson, comments:
“We are delighted to welcome our Patron, The Princess Royal to celebrate 10 years of Sport and Exercise Medicine being a medical specialty in its own right, we now have over 100 consultants on the General Medical Council register across the UK.
“Our Fellows and Members work across the disciplines of musculoskeletal medicine, exercise medicine and in team care, having provided support for the TeamGB and ParalympicGB athletes at the recent Games in Rio. Over the next 10 years, exercise medicine will become accepted as the most cost effective management for many of the chronic diseases seen within the NHS and we expect our Fellows and Members to play a leading role in developing services in this important area of medicine.”
The specialty of Sport and Exercise Medicine was born following official recognition by the Department of Health and the launch of the Faculty in 2006. The FSEM oversees specialty training, curriculum and examination of all Sport and Exercise Medicine Doctors and Consultants across the UK.
As the FSEM enters its second decade, it plans to continue to grow both its specialist consultant numbers (Fellows) and its membership numbers. The FSEM’s aim is to ensure the standards and skills of this unique medical specialty are applied across all sport and exercise from grass roots level up, to public health and in the NHS through the prevention, management and rehabilitation of many common conditions and diseases via exercise and physical activity.
