Honorary Fellows 2015

The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK (FSEM) is pleased to announce two new Honorary Fellows were awarded at the Faculty’s Annual Diploma Ceremony on Thursday 24 September 2015.

Professor Sir Harry Burns, Professor of Global Health at Strathclyde University and Professor Michael Cullen, Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultant Musgrave Park Hospital, received their awards at the Royal College of Physicians in London in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the specialism of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

In every appointment Professor Sir Harry Burn’s has held in public medicine, he has emphasised the importance of sport and exercise to ‘wellness’ – to physical and psychological health and social integration. Professor Burns was CMO for Scotland from 2005 to 2014 and has become known for his work to address health inequalities.

Professor Michael Cullen has been a major force in influencing the development of Sport and Exercise Medicine, over two decades Professor Cullen has held key leadership roles in both the specialty association and the Faculty giving much to the development and progress of the specialty. Throughout, Professor Cullen has offered his expertise as an examiner for the FSEM Diploma as well as being an external examiner. He is a senior associate editor of the British Journal of Sports medicine and continues to publish.

The FSEM awards up to two Honorary Fellows per year via its Members and Fellows Committee.
