BASEM Chair Update

Prof Eleanor Tillett, BASEM Chair demits office.

Eleanor was elected as the BASEM Chair in 2020, and FSEM have been very privileged to work with Eleanor. Her dedication and unwavering commitment has been pivotal in the development of sport and exercise medicine, and particularly in the last 18 months, where Eleanor has played an essential role in establishing a collaborative working relationship between FSEM and BASEM and steering our organisations towards our future goal of reforming as a College of SEM. We are very grateful for her excellent leadership and we are fortunate that Eleanor is currently an elected member of FSEM Council and will continue to support the development and journey through this role.

Prof Patrick Wheeler, successful as new BASEM Chair.

Patrick has been elected by BASEM members as the new Chair. He will take over from Eleanor and continue leading on the reforming as a new joint organisation. Patrick was elected to council in 2016 and was appointed as FSEM’s Honorary Treasurer in 2020, he also sits on the BASEM Board. We believe Patrick’s dedication and enthusiasm is already evident and we are confident that his knowledge of both organisations will create a positive impact in the fundamental few years ahead.

For transparency and to uphold standards of integrity and prevent any potential conflicts of interest, Patrick will step down from his role as our Honorary Treasurer and Trustee of the Faculty. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Patrick for his exceptional dedication and hard work on the Faculty’s finances. He was also paramount in supporting the Head of Faculty set up as an independent Charity in April this year; and his clinical guidance, support and contributions to Council and the Office Bearers has been invaluable. We would like to thank Patrick for all his support and success, the commitment is truly appreciated.

In this new role of BASEM Chair, Patrick will be co-opted onto Council as the BASEM representative, he will be an observer on the Trustee Board with no voting rights. This synergy will allow for better communication and collaboration in achieving our aim of becoming a joint organisation with BASEM.

Honorary Treasurer Vacancy

As Patrick will step down as Honorary Treasurer for his new role, we are now looking for a new Honorary Treasurer. The Treasurer shall be an ordinary Fellow, Member or Honorary Fellow appointed by the Council for an initial period of three years (this term may be shorter depending on when we move to become College of SEM).

The Honorary Treasurer is also a Trustee of FSEM. They will be responsible for the charity’s governance and strategy, and for making sure that the charity is administered effectively along with the President, Vice President(s), Honorary Secretary and four Lay Trustees.

The role of Honorary Treasurer will support the Office Bearers and Council to advance the purposes of our charity, but will supervise the financial affairs of the Faculty and shall balance the accounts every year to a date to be prescribed by the Board and shall present to the Annual Meeting of the Faculty, and provide updates at both Council and Board meetings.
