101 Sport and Exercise Medicine Doctors on the Specialist Register
The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) UK is pleased to announce that there is now 101 Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultants on the GMC Specialist Register. This is a significant step in the development of one of the UK’s newest medical specialties. The FSEM was launched in 2006 to develop the specialty, set training standards and support doctors working with athletes and patients in the field of sport medicine, exercise medicine, MSK medicine and rehabilitation.
Dr Roderick Jaques, President of the FSEM UK comments: “We now have over 100 doctors on the GMC specialist register, a reflection of the increasing high standards of practice in Sport and Exercise Medicine across the UK. Compared to other larger medical specialties, we still have a relatively small number, however the potential for Sport and Exercise Medicine to grow and be applied to modern day healthcare is enormous as we see an increase in health conditions related to physical inactivity and lifestyle.”
The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine has over 560 Members and Fellows including those on the specialist register. Following this milestone, the organisation will continue to promote the unique skills and knowledge Sport and Exercise Medicine doctors have in improving the health of the nation and treating many common diseases and conditions through exercise and physical activity.
